Media Awards

Three best productions from Media awards (my opinion)

GCSE - Thrift Shop
GCSE - Dollhouse
GCSE - Not Afraid

This production was successful in covering most key aspects of the film language. The creator has used excellent cinematography and camera work by making sure he included things such as framing, composition, tilt and at the beginning and end good use of zoom was used. Apart from cinematography, most areas of mise-en-scene was used and put into the work effectively such as clothing. During the entire production a different range of costume was used from casual clothing to a lion skin cloak.
Props were minimised however once they were used, it excited the audience because not every person has access to cloaks and ancient walking sticks. His facial expressions throughout the production was well contained, he went along with the same facial expression the original artist used which was for the best as it was probably the only right way. The sound used throughout the production was non-diegetic sound because the music track had been played over the production content. Sound bridges played a major key role in the production too.
But most importantly his editing skills made the production excellent. There was various elements of editing throughout which included; continuity cutting, jump cuts, subliminal shots etc.

Extention Tasks

From 0:55-1:36

The first film is mostly long shot and the movement of the camera is used to direct the audience attention to the viewpoint of the main actor. It has various amounts of crane shots where the camera moves around at a distance from the ship in the first clip. There was a vast majority of a medium shot one he was giving a speech.
There was one Long shot which enables the audience to view the characters in a pull perspective.

Throughout this extract the camera mainly used medium shots to capture the story. As the murderer homes into his victim only then do we capture a close up to have a clear view of the characters facial expressions. There was panning when the girl realised that she had been tricked and was figuring out whether she was seeing correctly.

The two extracts are almost similar however in the 1940s the scenes would have minimal movement compared to the 1990s. The camera shots was more focused on the characters whereas in 1990s it was focused on the surroundings, the setting so the audience could get a better perspective

The Man Who Fell to Earth 1976

The Man Who Fell to Earth 1976

What so we learn about the character from the way he relates to his environment?

It is certainly identifiable that our character is rather dazed with his surroundings and unfamiliar, he seems confused as his body language is presented in a different manner as to one would in comfortable surroundings. Our character stands on what seems to be a mountain, it is a very exhausting to climb a hill/mountain but the character does not seem to know why he is there, suggesting he might not have climbed his way to his current position which leaves him and the audience rather confused. He's attire is simple but mysterious with a black coat, he is either trying not to draw much attention to himself on purpose or has been simple with his wardrobe choices this particular day. There's a point where he seems to be praying, for a character to be lost and confused it is only natural for him to turn to the upper power as he sees God might be the only one left to give him answers or he could have done something regrettable to have put himself in such a situation. He eventually walks out and crosses a road only be nearly hit by a car and narrowly misses death, there can only be two explanations; he is either too dazed with his current situation and a lot is going through his mind that he didn't stop to look or he is not from this planet and had no clue what just happened. Taking his hat off, implying  he has given up with answers and searching, this is a sign of defeat which also imply's that he is almost comfortable.

What expectations do we have of the genre and narrative of the film?

This particular film might be a a hybrid between a science fiction and mystery.

Film Noir and Lighting

Film Noir is a style of film making that has different ways of introducing varies plots, effects  and characters (Conventions). This is most often achieved by cinematography and lighting. Lighting can be broken down into Low/High Key lighting this produces light well known as chiaroscuro. three-point lighting uses a key light, a fill light, and a back light for illumination and back lighting is used to create silhouettes which makes films more mysterious.

Image result for examples of low key lighting in movies

In order to make the character seem mysterious and dark , the mise - en- scene uses a low lighting to contrast between low and dark parts.  The lighting coming from the right side of actors face illuminates the entire image which suggests the character is a protagonist.  The fact the light highlights him and the couch in the background suggests that represents him very well; someone who spends majority of their time working in their office. The left of his face is hidden from the light suggesting he has a mysterious side to him which might be difficult in hiding from his everyday life e.g the how the light captures his loose tie and slump figure. But he might seems to have characteristics of antagonist too ( chiaroscuro).

Activity 2
Image result for lights out

The scene from Lights Out uses high-key lighting as it uses filler lights to show a dimly lit scene. This gives it an interesting effect as the scene is supposed to take place during the night- with the absence of the filler lights the characters facial expressions will not be seen. There is still a contrast between light and dark, but it is more subtle. This gives creates tension in the scene as the contrast suggests that both characters have two sides to them. Good and Evil.

The extract also uses both top lighting an under-lighting to produce the given effects that set a suspenseful and melodramatic tone to the scene. Diana's  face isn't only illuminated using under-lighting.

Activity 1

  Costume
The mise-en-scene shows a young man in his twenty's running towards danger, probably because he is wearing military uniform. The people in the background are blurred and he is in the centre of the frame suggesting he is a significant figure highlighting his authority alongside his uniform. His uniform consists of a simple beige coloured jacket and trousers with a navy ascot hat. This suggests that he is probably a local military based near a town. Judging from the clothing the people behind are wearing this movie is set probably in the 1970's. This character is probably a protagonist allowing the audience to have a good idea of what sort of character he will be throughout the movie.

Lighting
The scene is in daylight however it is not a bright sunny day but it has a dull, dim light to it. This is because of the current events happening, the picture suggests that a recent attack has just occurred and things are seconds from turning hectic.

Actor
The actor is running away from the scene behind him not fearfully but in a determined stance. His posture suggests that he is use to being the hero; it's almost natural for him to do what it takes to put a stop to things.

Make- Up
The actor’s uniform is well kept with no stain marks or mud anywhere. He is definitely a protagonist caring about the way he comes across to other people. All men in uniform are expected to be too well kept, however the fact not a single stain on him suggests that he has never been on a mission and this is his only chance to prove himself, judging from his urgency.

Facial Expression
The characters facial expression suggests that he is very determined and not a slacker. He has a mission and he must complete. His running stance suggests that.

Props
The iconography suggests that the genre of the movie is a War Film. The character has a gun in his hand alongside his uniform which suggests he is a war hero, protecting the innocent from danger.

Setting
This image is set in the middle of a road with a group of people gathering behind the main character some looking dazed, some distraught . The character has probably ran through the road passing all of people when this picture was captured.  The eyes of the audience are on the main character making him an enigma

Activity 2

Insidious 2012

Image result for insidious

The scene shows a figure watching over a young women sleeping at the side of her bed. Conventions such as a masked figure standing at at the foot of someones bed as they sleep is used in majority of horror films to create suspense . The figure standing in the shadows refrain us from getting a clear image of our masked figure, this is because lack of identity causes fear amongst the audience. The mysterious figure is wearing rags which is normally involved with disturbing things. The figure has purposefully stood at the end of the bed to scare the audience however instead of facing the women in the bed, the figure is faced towards the camera making the viewers terrified that it's for them.

Blade Runner 1982

Image result for blade runner

The character wears a long coat in a mist of futuristic bright coloured cars suggesting he wants to conceal himself from something, the fact he has his back to the camera could be mysterious.  The dark colours surrounding him seem out of place around the bright colours surrounding him. It could mean he does not belong here and is wondering ways to escape. This images makes the audience wonder why he is all alone in what seems to be a city, (japan) which should have people all over the place. The cars flying represent the future, and him being the only lone figure in the street, could suggest it's just him and the robots.

Grown Ups 2010

Image result for grown ups

This image screams comedy. The  characters are all lined up and are walking in a comical way in all identical uniform, this could suggest they are getting ready for a competition. The lighting is very bright and you can see everything in the image, probably because it's suppose to represent everyday life. Their facial expression are stern and hold power however their tops suggest the opposite with children cartoons. The men seem to be nearly in their 50's which makes it more hilarious.

Film Poster Analysis

Blade Runner 1982

Image result for blade runner

Judging from poster, the most obvious film genre for this specific movie would be a Science Fiction. The images gives off a futuristic vibe with the light strobes in the corner, the tall skyscrapers are not designed like any buildings in present, suggesting that the film might not be based in the current time. There are two people on the poster, giving the audience the impression they are the main characters or will appear the most throughout the movie. The women seems relaxed compared to the man, she has a cigarette in her hand whereas he has a gun. A women and a cigarette could mean authority, women are not usually associated with a cigarette. The man with the gun shows dominance, a man on a mission. From the poster, the story line might involve a romance between the man and the women, or some sort of relationship whether it be a good or bad. Seeing as it is a science fiction film, there might be a hero and Lillian thing going on. The ones with the cigarette are normally the villains in such films; laid back, demanding, threatening. The man with the gun could be our hero, his face seems to covered in dirt, sweat and a face of determination could suggest he is hard working in complete whatever his ''mission'' might be.   The target audience for this specific film might be people over the age of 15 but mostly adults because at the bottom of the poster, it states ''R'' meaning it is rated as ''restricted''.

Scary Movie 2 2001

Image result for scary movie 2

Judging from the title of the film, it's film genre might be horror however the poster image itself does not say that. The image looks almost comical, like a comedy. The green shirt with '' I <3 dead people'' could be foreshadowing death within the movie alongside the man wearing a mouth mask (maybe the villain?). There seems to be a man with his head cut off and filled with popcorn, to an audience like me, I do not find that ''scary'' but funny instead. Judging from the poster the film might have some scary content within it however it might be heavily filled with comedy. This film genre might be a horror - comedy.  The film might be about a group of teenagers who are all different but merge together to fight a specific thing that might be causing them difficulty. The priest at the back has his fingers crossed together in a cross, so that might mean what ever is bothering them could be seen as unholy in the eyes of the priest e.g a ghost spirit of some kind? The audience target for this film might be for the ages of 15 and over because most horror films have age restrictions due to some horrific content. However I am not 100% sure because of the comedy, whether the humour is neutral or might it be more for adults?

Uzak (Distance) 2004

Image result for uzak

A lonesome man over looking a contaminated river with building and factories in the distance, releasing sky blinding smoke into the air. The man is stood in on a snow covered hill (I presume). He wears a knee length black coat, scarf wrapped around his neck and black trousers. He seems to be contemplating something, perhaps something troubling. As he faces the outlines of the city far away he is probably saying his last goodbye, to a place where he probably has a lot of connection to. The dirty water, the blinding smoke might suggest that this is a poor place, the colours chosen for this particular poster are dull, saddening and gloomy. Something terrible has probably happened to have caused him to say his goodbye. Maybe he is not saying goodbye, maybe it's ''good riddance''. The film genre might be a drama or a documentary styled film.  The target audience for this film would be for all ages. Most dramas allow all ages to view their movies. Most importantly the movie is not English as ''Uzark'' is Turkish for distance, which suggests that this movie has been subtitled with English.

I'm Not Scared 2004

Image result for i'm not scared film

A young boy assuming he is under the age of 10, looks down at what seems to be a dug up hole. He looks troubled, like what ever he discovered is most definitely not a good thing. The young boy looks like he wishes he could turn time back and not have discovered anything. The title is very interesting as it says the opposite of his facial expression. The bright blue sky contrast to the dark hole below the young boy suggests that there's horrible lying beneath. He is probably convincing himself that he's not scared, so he can stay strong for something or someone. There's the chance he can get in huge trouble for whatever he might have discovered. The film genre is Thriller as it states on the film poster. The kid must have dug knowing he would find something worth finding. Most thrillers have the age rating of 15 however because of the young boy in the movie, I will say the target audience for this film is over 12 year old children and for adults too.

Sin City 2005

Image result for sin city#

This appears to be a movie that has a generic convention. Judging from the black and white colours with the popping red comic scripting suggests that this film is an action film. The male with the gun draws the most attention through the poster suggesting he is the central character within the film, with a glamorous cliche blonde women beside him could suggest that be his sidekick? A low angle shot stands out the most which captures all 5 characters in a menacing tone. I believe that this specific film is mostly tailored for adults or those above the age of 15, the title of the movie ''Sin City'' can be only recognized by those who have already committed a sin or those who have come really close to.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 2006

Image result for pirates of caribbean dead man's chest

This film immediately strikes as an action-adventure film. As the title suggests, the film stars buccaneers who quite conventionally in regards to pirate films, go on a search for treasure. The mise-en-scene in the poster further supports this with the one of the actors branding a bandanna and flintlock pistol prop in his hand, along with the ship of the centre of the poster. These all help to contribute to this idea of piracy and with the determined looks on the faces of the three (man) actors on the poster as if they're driven to obtain this referred to treasure, it's not wrong to assume that this film is in the action- adventure genre based around pirates. The target audience for a film like this likely teenagers up to adults simple as a result of the fat the film is likely to contain slightly more violent scenes as apparent with props such as the pistol in the hand of Johnny Depp,

Bride & Prejudice 2004

Image result for bride and prejudice

This film seems comical, this is because when reading the title 'Pride and Prejudice' springs to mind however judging from the front cover it isn't remotely close due to the festivity feel with the big smiles, striking poses, up to date fashion etc. The looks might not be related to the original story but might the content? In the background there seems to be two sides of cultural ; the classic western with casual attire and then there's the classic Indian cultural festivity. The conflict between two sides brings to people together and they learn to solve their different in order to be together. The film genre would probably be a Rom-com/drama judging from the poster, and in most rom-coms and dramas the target audience would be for every one of all ages (PG)

Million Dollar Baby 2004

Image result

The story  will be about the girl being trained in some kind of fighting form,  this is because of the girls top it looks like the kind of top that some one training will wear. Another possibility is the girl has something special about her and had it since birth, and is being chased for whatever it is that is so special about her. From the title as  if a baby is worth a million dollars they must have something special but as the woman is fully grown that is why i think she gets chased.
The genre this  belongs to is action because of the way the girl is standing she looks like she is in a fighting position and her clothes again look like a fighting related top.
The target audience for this is 18-40  because it looks like an action movie but the reason the older target audience is because of the two actors Clint and Morgan as older people will know them from some of their older movies so might want to see this movie.
